Causes of Asbestosis
Asbestosis is a respiratory disease caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos. Workers who’ve had lots of exposure to asbestos over a long period of time are the most likely to be diagnosed with asbestosis.
The disease begins when a person inhales asbestos fibres. Asbestos fibres travel down into the lungs, penetrate the lung tissue and embed themselves there. They cause a inflammatory reaction which causes further inflammation and irreversible scarring on the lungs, known as fibrosis. The main symptoms are:
- Shortness of breath
- Tiredness
- A bad cough
- Chest pain
