Two years ago a tragic accident on a roller coaster left several young people severely injured; in Leah Washington’s case she lost her leg while others suffered smashed knees and other horrific injuries.
The accident happened on the ‘Smiler’ ride at Alton Towers when human error allowed the roller-coaster ride to commence while a stationary car was still on the tracks. Sixteen people were in the carriage that then ploughed into the empty car, causing horrific injuries for many.
The owners of Alton Towers, Merlin Attractions, were fined £5million by the Health and Safety Executive, but compensation payments – expected to run into millions of pounds – to those injured are yet to be settled.
Leah has been able to walk again thanks to a £60,000 prosthetic limb that will need replacing every few years but she has conceded that her goal to become a teacher is now over and she hopes that she will be eligible for compensation to cover her lost income since the incident.
Have you been injured?
While the roller coaster crash was fortunately an exceedingly rare incident, accidents happen every day around Britain’s workplaces and public spaces. Citizens have a right to feel safe when out in public, relying on others to perform their jobs safely and correctly so that people are not injured unnecessarily. If you have been injured and it wasn’t your fault, you could be entitled to make a claim for compensation. If you were to slip on a wet floor and injure yourself to an extent that your job is affected, you could be in pain and out of pocket when a simple sign could have notified you of the danger. It doesn’t matter how you are injured – if it was not your fault and could have been avoided then you could be entitled to make a claim.
