Abattoir / Meat Processing Industry Injuries

Abattoirs, slaughterhouses and other meat processing facilities can be dangerous places to work and with an estimated 97,000 people directly employed in the industry in the UK it is little wonder that we at Russell Worth Solicitors are asked to deal with a number of accident enquiries arising from the industry.

Common injuries that we are asked to help with include:-

Cuts, lacerations and, in the most extreme cases amputations, caused by knives or other bladed machines. Knives and blades are essential tools of the trade and when used correctly, by properly trained staff, using the correct and well maintained equipment and PPE, then the risk they present is kept to a minimum. However, if the training is inadequate or if the equipment is not maintained properly then serious injuries can occur.

Slips and trips. The floor of abattoirs and other meat processing areas can easily become contaminated presenting a slipping or tripping hazard. As the floor areas tend to be metal or concrete this increases the likelihood of serious injury.

Crush injuries. Caused by the machines used to process meat.

Infections. Although relatively rare, infections can still be passed from the animals – alive or dead – to workers.

Repetitive strain injuries. Caused by doing certain tasks over and over without breaks, job rotation and/or adequate training.

Hearing loss/tinnitus. From the noise of animals or machinery.

Lack of supervision. We are often told by clients that managers and supervisors rarely visit the ‘shop floor’ and this in itself can lead to accidents and injury if staff try to ‘cut corners’ or fool around – or even if they simply make mistakes as there is no one around to ask for help.

The above list is by no means exhaustive so even if your injury or accident type isn’t listed then our expert solicitors may still be able to help.
