A South Wales company will begin working with Cardiff University’s school of engineering to create an innovative new alternative to scaffolding, which it is hoped will lower the number of scaffolding accidents each year.

Voltcom Group, based in Llantrisant, South Wales will join forces with Cardiff University to develop the portable structures, which it is anticipated will be used for the protection of roads, pathways and railways during construction. The new system should reduce the number of hazards present on construction sites, therefore contributing to a safer working environment hopefully with fewer accidents.

Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that, despite the construction industry as a whole making up only 5 per cent of Britain’s workers, the industry accounts for more than a third of fatal injuries in the workplace. 42 construction workers died as the result of accidents at work during 2013/2014.
