A former merchant seaman has received £38,000 in compensation from numerous shipping companies after he developed diffuse pleural thickening following significant asbestos exposure.
Michael Hopekirk, from Sussex, retired in 2006 but spent much of his working life as a skipper and engineer on board merchant navy ships. He was regularly exposed to heavy asbestos when the ships went out in bad weather and dust would rise in the air from asbestos pipes. He was not given any protective clothing to shield him from the dust.
Mr Hopekirk is now 70-years-old and began having health problems in 2008. He was told that he’d developed diffuse pleural thickening of his lungs, caused by asbestos exposure.
