A retired lecturer has died as a result of significant asbestos exposure early in his working life.

Kenneth Salt, who died from malignant mesothelioma, passed away at his home in Stone in September this year. He was diagnosed with the condition less than two week prior to his death.

Cannock Coroner’s Court heard how, in 1955, Mr Salt started his apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery. He remained in the trade until 1972, at which point he joined the prison service for a job as a carpentry and joinery instructor for inmates. He became a lecturer in carpentry and joiner at Stafford College in 1974, a position in which he remained for 20 years.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the presence of malignant mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs which has debilitating side effects and develops as a result of exposure to asbestos particles. The inquest heard how the exposure was most likely to have taken place in the early years of Mr Salt’s career.
