A man from Hampshire died as a result of asbestos exposure, an inquest heard yesterday.

Raymond Lucas, from Totton, Hampshire, died in March of this year after developing malignant mesothelioma. He was 89.

The inquest heard how medical tests found no evidence of asbestos, but concluded that Mr Lucas had been exposed to the substance on several occasions.

During the Second World War, Mr Lucas checked for incendiary bombs in buildings and would have been exposed to asbestos at this time.

He also worked as an electrical engineer, with asbestos found in television sets that he worked on early in his career.

Simon Burge, Deputy coroner for Central Hampshire, said: “Given the likelihood from his occupational history that Mr Lucas was working with asbestos, I am going to return a verdict of death due to an industrial disease.”
