A former sailor has died after he was exposed to asbestos, an inquest has heard.
Keith Chester, from Bishop Waltham, served in the Royal Navy for 12 years and died aged 79 in February this year.
An inquest was held in Winchester on Wednesday 2nd April 2014 into Mr Chester’s death. His son, Ian, wrote in an email to the assistant coroner of the inquest that it was through his role as sailor that his father came into contact with asbestos. The court also heard how Mr Chester may also have come into contact with the substance when he worked as an engineer at Vosper Thorneycroft.
Through a post mortem examination, it was shown that Mr Chester died due to a combination of mesothelioma and bronchopneumonia, which was likely to be as a result of his exposure to asbestos. The trial recorded a verdict of death from industrial disease.
