A retired plumber died due to being exposed to asbestos during his career, an inquest heard yesterday (6th August).

Edward Matthews, 74, from Haverhill, Suffolk, died in November after being diagnosed with mesothelioma.

After suffering with chest pain and a shortness of breath, Mr Matthews was admitted to a hospital in Suffolk. Coroner Dr Peter Dean said subsequent medical records showed he had a chest x-ray, which indicated the presence of mesothelioma, with a biopsy later confirming this.

A post mortem examination concluded that Mr Matthews died from mesothelioma.

Dr Dean recorded a verdict that Mr Matthews died as the result of an industrial disease.
