An art teacher has died from mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos through hanging paintings on classroom walls.

60-year-old Jennifer Barnett, of Painswick, Glos, passed away in September 2014.

Speaking at the Gloucester inquest into her death, her husband Nigel Barnett said: “She became an art teacher and worked at various schools, often hanging paintings on walls containing asbestos.”

In a written statement, he added that his wife had also been exposed to the substance whilst working on farms in her 20s, where she was required to cut sheets of asbestos.

“She was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma in July 2013 and I was with her when she collapsed and died at home,” he said.

The inquest heard how the Mrs Barnett had been undergoing chemotherapy treatment and Coroner Katy Skerrett confirmed that a large tumour had been found in the right lung.

Concluding the case, Ms Skerrett said: “It is clear that there was sufficient exposure to asbestos in her occupation for me to reach a conclusion that this lady died from an industrial disease.”
