Millions of pounds in compensation is being paid out for medical malpractice at hospitals in Sussex.
Nearly £25 million was spent within one year following claims made against its three main hospital trusts, an increase of £3.9 million on the year before.
Health bosses say the increase is down to the growing cost of providing care for people left with brain damage or other injuries as a result of errors.
Some cases can also take a number of years to be resolved and reach a final settlement.
A spokesman for Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust said: ““We take patient safety extremely seriously at all times and we fully investigate any incident that gives rise to a complaint or legal claim to ensure it does not happen again.
