An employee of Premier Foods, the largest food producer in the UK, has been awarded £4,600 in compensation after he was injured in a fall whilst cleaning a bread oven.

Paul Strange was tasked with cleaning the large oven at the firms’ Avonmouth bakery. However, when he tried to get himself down onto the floor of the oven, there wasn’t a ladder or other option available and he therefore had to climb across the oven wall, using a crankshaft that was fitted to the wall to support him.

In making his way across Paul slipped and fell with force onto the floor of the oven. He injured his left shoulder and suffered ligament damage as a result, also enduring a soft tissue injury to his wrist. He made a full recovery however his injuries meant that he had to take two months off work to recover.

Quintin Hasler, a personal injury solicitor at Russell Worth solicitors, who has dealt with many cases arising from accidents at work, said: “Had Premier Foods had suitable measures in place so that the cleaning of the oven could be carried out safely then this accident wouldn’t have happened.

“Instead, Premier Foods allowed their employee to make his way down from the oven through use of a crankshaft, which is no adequate substitute for the ladder needed to carry out his duties.”
