A woman whose husband died after he was exposed to asbestos through his work on navy ships will receive £40,000 in compensation.

The 83-year-old man, who died in February 2013, worked at Portsmouth dockyard from 1944 to 1947.

He worked as an apprentice naval shipwright and was on board ships when material was being stripped from pipes. During the war, he also worked in the dockyard and was further exposed to asbestos when ships returned heavily bombed.

His exposure caused a delayed-reaction disease and ultimately culminated in his death seven decades later.
