A roofing contractor in Somerset has been fined following an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive found the firm negligent of adequately protecting their workers at risk from falls whilst working on a barn roof.
The investigation was started following a complaint to the HSE about the safety of workers during the installation of a barn roof by Neil Popham in Over Stowey in Somerset.
Mr Popham was prosecuted at Tauton Magistrates Court after a visit to the site by a HSE inspector who found three workers on top of a steel agricultural building installing roof sheets, working without edge protection or netting to mitigate the effects of any fall. The workers also accessed the roof, which varied from seven to nine metres, by a ladder that was not tied to prevent falling.
Mr Popham pleaded guilty to a breach of the Work at Height Regulations 2005, was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £950 in costs.
