A man from Scunthorpe died as a result of asbestos exposure, an inquest has heard. 79-year-old George Altoft was employed by British Steel and worked as a pitman at the old melting shop. Before he died, he gave a statement recalling details of the exposure, which said how he came into contact with asbestos whilst removing the linings from furnaces.
Through Mr Altoft’s statement, the court heard that there was “a lot of asbestos” and no protective equipment available. There was no warning of the risks involved, he said.
Mr Altroft became ill in December 2012. He died in June this year.
Deputy coroner Andrew Pascoe concluded that Mr Altroft died of malignant mesothelioma.
