Pancreatic Cancer Misdiagnosis
According to figures from NHS.co.uk, around 8,800 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year, making it the 11th most common type of cancer in the UK. Like a number of other cancers, there are very few symptoms in the early stages but suffers usually experience back and stomach pain, jaundice and weight loss.
The pain may come and go as the tumours grow which is where the misdiagnosis can occur, and it is mistaken for indigestion and food allergies. Many patients also have changes in bowel habits and suffer from vomiting and fever and shivering which again occur in some food allergies.
Confusion over cancer symptoms
One of the most shocking cases of cancer misdiagnosis occurred when Julie Rogers from Newton Abbot was told 19 times that she didn’t have cancer even though she presented classic signs of pancreatic cancer when she visited her doctor. On one occasion, she was simply sent home with painkillers. Eventually, when no diagnosis was forthcoming and the pain in her back and stomach became unbearable, Julie paid £600 for a scan with a private consultant who finally confirmed her diagnosis. Unfortunately, her cancer was so advanced, it was classed as ‘inoperable’
