Ears, Nose and Throat Errors
Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery covers a wide range of procedures concerning the ear, nose and throat as well as more general issues with the neck and head. Some examples of ENT surgery are listed below:
- Rhinoplasty (nasal surgery)
- Pinnaplasty (ear surgery)
- Throat and nose tumours
- Sinusitis
- Tinnitus
- Issues with balance
- Salivary gland disorders
- Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea
- Facial pain
- Minor nasal obstructions removals
The vast majority of procedures are straightforward, and pose little to no risk to patients. However, regrettably there are some common complications that can occur with ENT operations including:
- Damage to the bones surrounding around the eye skull during Functional Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). This is by far the most common problem of all ENT procedures, which can cause cerebral spinal fluid to leak from the brain, and, if not treated, can lead to a permanent loss of smell or even meningitis.
- Facial weakness, caused by damage to the facial nerve
- Failure to diagnose and/or treat tumours of the nose and sinuses
- Damage to the vocal cords during anaesthetic intubation or through surgery
- Failure to diagnose and/or treat throat or neck swellings and tumours
- Deafness, due to a failure in diagnosing hearing problems
- Improper treatment of problems with the inner ear, resulting in balance problems and the patient developing tinnitus
- Thyroid disease
