At first glance you may think that the office environment may not look like a particularly risky place to work and on the whole you would generally be right. While it is true that office accidents and injuries have risen over the last few decades this isn’t because offices have suddenly become more dangerous, it is simply due to the fact that more and more of us work in offices than we used to.
It is also true to say that advances in medicine and the free availability of information via sources such as the internet have also contributed to the rise in office based claims, what may have been dismissed as ‘wear and tear’ in the past by some GP’s is now being recognised as repetitive strain injuries caused by too much computer work for example and people are more aware then ever of their legal rights.
It is not just repetitive injuries that have risen for office staff but also other injuries such as tripping over wires/ cables, back injuries due to lifting boxes of papers and even injuries caused by the actual office building itself which we cover in more detail below. As we become more and more reliant on technology and we bring more gadgets into the office to make our lives easier so we see more cables lying around and generally more scope for accidents to happen. Remember, your employer is under a legal obligation to provide you with a safe working environment and it doesn’t matter if you work in an office or a construction site, unsafe practices and poor working practices cause injuries.
Perhaps more worrying are the dangers you cannot see and don’t know about and asbestos certainly falls into that category. A number of office buildings were constructed before the use of asbestos was finally banned and as we alluded to above, your office structure itself could be damaging your health. If you work in an older building and new plug sockets are being installed or even if someone simply hammers in a nail to put up a picture it could be releasing asbestos fibres into the atmosphere. We are certainly not scaremongering and hasten to add that the majority of buildings will have had surveys done and any harmful material will have long since been removed but this is not always the case. If you are ever unfortunate enough to be told that you may have suffered asbestos damage but can’t think where you may have come into contact with it, contact The Claim Zone and see if we can help trace its source.
For all office accidents our panel of solicitors offer a no win no fee service and you keep 100% of your damages.
