Construction worker injured in skylight accident
21st February 2012
A young man from Nottingham has experienced severe injuries after falling through a skylight whilst working on a farm building in Carmarthenshire.
24-year-old Daniel Elliot suffered several serious injuries in the accident including; two broken spinal bones, fractured pelvis and an arm injury which required stitches. As a result of his injuries, the construction worker will not be able to work as a steel erector.
The incident occurred when Mr Elliot, an inexperienced steel erector, was assisting in the construction of a new pitched roof between existing buildings on a farm. The work involved the demolition of a small existing roof as well as the installation of new steel frames. He stepped back onto a delicate PVC skylight whilst standing on the roof pulling up an extension lead.
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said: “There's no room for complacency when undertaking work at height in the construction industry. The risks are well known and employers must ensure the work is planned, managed and supervised by competent people.”
