There used to air a long running television advert showing a gentleman falling off a ladder and then explaining how he called a freephone number and subsequently received a compensation payment – how many of you saw the advert and thought it was his own fault!? Well, guess what – it wasn’t.
To the uninitiated a ladder is just a ladder, once you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all, right? Wrong! Different ladders are designed for different purposes, some of them may have general purpose domestic use, others are designed for heavier industrial purposes, some need additional support to safely anchor them while again others do not – the list of seemingly subtle but ultimately vitally important differences between ladders is a long one and using the wrong ladder can result in serious injury. All too often workers try and ‘make do’ with the tools they are given to do a job even though they aren’t the correct ones, ladders included, and sadly this is when accidents happen.
It is a scenario all too familiar to the thousands of tradesmen and women throughout the UK, you are sent out to do a job only to find that the ladder you have brought along with you isn’t the right one. Or it may even be the right one but its not in the best of condition. What do you do? Do you phone the boss or head back to work to get the right one or do you try and make the best of what you’ve got rather than be criticised for wasting the companies time – not an easy position to be put in especially if you’ve got an angry customer in front of you who insists they want the job doing now. We all know what we should do, come back later with the right tools for the job, but in the cold light of day how many of us would try to manage and hope for the best.
Your employer is legally responsible to ensure you have a safe working environment and a safe system of work, this includes giving you the right ladder to do the job. If you don’t any you suffer an injury as a result you may be entitled to compensation. Tell us what happened and we’ll investigate your case and let you know if you may be entitled to claim.
